Ruins of Santiago Apostle
Also known as the Ruins of Cartago, located in Cartago in
the central park.
The church was founded between 1577 and 1580,
however, as time went by, the building suffered damage from earthquakes. (San
Antonio earthquakes on September 2, 1841, and Santa Monica on May 4, 1910). The
last reconstruction was in 1870, and the church was almost finished when the
earthquake of 1910 destroyed the building. Up to now, all attempts to rebuild
it have been abandoned. The ruins were declared Cultural Heritage in 1982.
It
is also said that inside the church, a priest killed his brother because he was
going to marry his girlfriend and for that reason, the church was never rebuilt.
Nowadays in ruins,
you can take a walk through the beautiful and incredible tropical garden
that grows inside, the entrance is totally free,
and during the month of December, the site becomes into a huge portal or
Christmas nativity scene with farm animals. Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays from
8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and closed from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturdays and
Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Due
to its location and its history, the ruins of Cartago are one of the tourist
places with the most visitors every year.
