Ruins of Santiago Apostle

  Also known as the Ruins of Cartago, located in Cartago in the central park. The church was founded between 1577 and 1580, however, as time went by, the building suffered damage from earthquakes. (San Antonio earthquakes on September 2, 1841, and Santa Monica on May 4, 1910). The last reconstruction was in 1870, and the church was almost finished when the earthquake of 1910 destroyed the building. Up to now, all attempts to rebuild it have been abandoned. The ruins were declared Cultural Heritage in 1982. It is also said that inside the church, a priest killed his brother because he was going to marry his girlfriend and for that reason, the church was never rebuilt. Nowadays in ruins, you can take a walk through the beautiful and incredible tropical garden that grows inside, the entrance is totally free, and during the month of December, the site becomes into a huge portal or Christmas nativity scene with farm animals.   Cartago is a beautiful province that has different and cheap options to visit.   If you need a place to spend the weekend with your family, with your couple or even to go out with your friends, this is the perfect place to know the Prusia Forest.   If you live in San José you must take the Florencio del Castillo road towards Cartago, until you reach Tierra Blanca, from here it is 2 kilometers northeast on the road to the Irazu Volcano, take a left junction and continue approximately 4 kilometers. Duran Sanatorium

  If you want to know scary places it's impossible that you haven’t heard about the Duran Sanatorium located 7km north of the city of Cartago and about 18 kilometers southeast of the Irazú Volcano.   This abandoned building was created to treat people with tuberculosis the doctor Carlos Duran was the founder of the place.   The Duran Sanatorium was open from 1918 to 1973 after that time with advances in medicine the tuberculosis disease decreased, and the place was abandoned. Due to its history and unique architecture, in 2010 the Duran Sanatorium was   declared a National Heritage.   Nowadays this place is highly visited by tourists around all parts of the country for the background of the place. Lankester Botanical Garden

  British orchidologist Charles H. Lankester, who came to work in Costa Rica in 1940, founded the Lankester Botanical Garden in 1917 with the aim of preserving flora in Central America. When he died, the gardens were purchased by the Orchid Society of North America and the Stanley Smith English Foundation, which in 1973 became part of the University of Costa Rica and is responsible for administration today. According to research, there are around 15,000 orchids in this garden, of which about 1,000 species are from Central America.   Cartago is a beautiful city in Costa Rica, located southeast of San José. The city of Cartago owes its name to the ancient North African city of the same name Cartago of the Punic State.
